Any Joseph Campbell/Hero's Journey fans out there?

I'm a huge Joseph Campbell fan. Some girls chase rock stars...I admire deceased mythologists. But I've always liked smart men. I adore the Hero's Journey, and incorporate it into all my books. Anyone else out there have opinions? Questions? Don't know what I'm talking about?

My favorite part of The Hero's Journey is the reluctant hero. When an ordinary person has had ENOUGH and they realize if they don't act, then nothing's going to change! For my book HEDDA'S SWORD, out just today from Samhain, my heroine Maleta's gotten some powerful off-stage motivation. Raped and left for dead, her parents slaughtered, her ancestral home stolen and her little brother abducted and brainwashed. HEDDA'S SWORD opens on her hunting down the mercenary captain she holds responsible. Classic good vs evil light vs dark. Good is strengthened by the fight against evil. The light shines brighter when contrasted against the dark. In HEDDA'S SWORD, nothing and no one is what they seem at first. The journey twists and turns - you can never take anything for granted!

Hi Renee,
How great to see this post. The very first line of my upcoming book is "You are already the hero of your own life..." and the workshop I deliver based on the book utilises a lot of Campbell's structure as a means of looking at our own lives to see where we are on our own hero's journey. All too many people are bogged down in the day-to-day grind and cannot take a step back to see the shape of their own hero's tale, perhaps spending decades in the headlock of "resisting the call". While I have not read Campbell's book (it's on my list of "must reads" for 2009), reading about his model via 3rd party authors has provided me with a great tool to help unlock people's inner hero in my coaching, training and writing.

Would love to talk to you more about this, as I am looking for authors to interview on my very new (like only 1 week old!) Agreed that was exactly what I felt to see it obliges us to think about our own self, that part of our life, our hero is forced to comply with each of our goals and objectives in life and that makes us in our own heroes, certainly forces us to think very good, very, very good
