BOOK PLACE

A PLACE TO SHARE AND/OR PROMOTE BOOKS - SEE WHAT'S OUT THERE

I saw this question on another forum, and I'm really interested in finding out what all of you think. So here goes: when you read, are you looking for a good plot or good prose? Will you keep reading a book that contains no obvious plot if it contains fresh and unique writing? Let me know what you think.

A story that is written well but has a plot that is as dry as dirt, is still a story that's as dry as dirt. I think both elements are needed in order for a story to be worth my while. Otherwise I may as well be reading a well written dictionary, technical manual, or trade publication.

I read for both plot and prose; both are important to me. Frankly, I don't think I've ever read a piece of fiction that contains no plot. I don't imagine it would appeal to me. I do, however, read poetry and it doesn't necessarily have a "plot." Why do you ask? Are you thinking of writing something without a plot? I suppose some literary fiction doesn't have one.

With me it is definitely plot unless I'm reading poetry or a techie article. I read for enjoyment and escape from the worries of the moment. So I need a well-developed plot and good character development to keep me turning the pages. Otherwise I'll throw it down and pick up another. I'm not going to force myself to slog through a book just to say I read it. Too many great reads waiting to be read to do that.

When I read a book, I want to be thoroughly absorbed in the plot. It has to be a good plot that I can't figure out before I am mid-book like most books I've read. Grammatical errors are distractions and annoy me. The most prolific examples of excellent writing that is composed of plot and prose are Taylor Caldwell's and Ayn Rand's books. They were masters of both. Oh, and their english was excellent.

Chris,
I am looking for both, although I will finish a book not really well written, but with a great plot. A well written book with an interesting plot I will finiish and recommend to others.

Short thoughts: I'm a novelist and an acquiriing editor and don't focus much on plot in either role. Story, that's what matters to me. Someone said that plot is where the author wants to go, and story is where the characters want to go. That's not a bad definition. In story, characters lead the way and the tale grows organically. Any book by Robert B. Parker, in my opinion, is a good example.

Although prose style is a fine thing, it never comes first with me. When I see a book that puts it first, I consider that a literary novel, which I seldom read and never acquire. I don't want the reader's attention diverted by, "Wow, what a phrase." I want him to stay in the story, absorbed in its (apparent) reality.

So neither plot nor style. Characters and story

Helpless

Over the Holiday weekend I took a good look at my house and that familiar helples feeling washed over me again. It seemed like an insurmountable task to get the place in order. It still does.

I spend so much time writing and promoting after I do my day job, what little time I have left is precious. Still, sometimes I just have to buckle down and ignore my compulsion to write and make myself clean house instead. I tackled the spare bedroom, which had clothes and all kinds of other articles strewn over the bed, on the floor, and anywhere you can think of, compliments of myself and the DH, who were equally guilty.  I did make some headway, which made me feel good, but if I had more time I know I could do better. Also, there are so many other projects left to do if I were to get the house really into shape. I'm wondering how much I'll get done before Christmas, when I have my family over.

Maybe over the weekend I can get more done, that is, after I do the Illinois sales tax form first, which is due by the end of the month. I've got almost all of my check statements, except one, which I think I can find online, so maybe I can get that done. You may have guessed I'm not the most organized person in the world.

Anyway, let's see how far I can get cleaning up. I've got this kindle on loan from the library, with about 9 days left on it, and lots of good books on it beckoning to me. I've got some great ideas for stories I want to start and others I want to continue. I've got some blog buddies I haven't visited for a while. I wonder what will win out. (g)

What about you? What do you do about housework? Does it get in the way sometimes?

PS The not so surprising results are up on the left for my EZ poll. I'll have to do a harder one some time.

Time Out for Kindle Reading

Our local library has 8 kindles available for its patrons. The DH and I both got on the waiting list, mainly so I could use one. His number was reached and we picked up the kindle on Sunday afternoon. Now I've got a kindle to read for 2 weeks! So far I'm really loving it, especially the current book I'm reading, My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult.

What about you? Do you own a kindle? Or, have you tried someone else's? Would you like to?

Who's Doing Cyber Monday?

I'm very carefully going to check out the Cyber Monday deals. I have a few items in mind that I plan to buy, but it would be very nice if they'd go on sale and save me some money. I won't be spending much. Can't afford to do so this year.

What about you?
