Profile Information

Are you an Author, Reader, Publisher, Editor, Agent or Other?
I've been writing for what seems like half my life. In the beginning I wrote and self-published books about growing and using herbs. I've written a history of the town I live in, Big Sandy, TX, gotten two novels published and last year, self-published an anthology of short stories. The personal story of how God sustained me during the 15+ years my husband suffered from depression, Living With A Depressed Spouse, has been published by Tate Publishing and will be available in bookstores everywhere on Oct. 16th.

About Me:
Won't give my age but my husband and I have celebrated more than 50 years of being married.
Recently I learned about the fantastic work of Project Linus and have used my love of sewing quilts to make and donate baby blankets to that worthwhile agency.

Favorite Books:
I love reading well-written historical fiction. It helps me visualize how people lived in other times. I also enjoy biographies. Titles come and go as favorites...but all time favorite authors include Pearl Buck, Herman Wouk, Madelaine L'Engle and Guy DuMaupassant.
Favorite Bookstores on land or cyberspace
I buy most of my books used, going to amazon.com or a local used bookstore, Coffee & Books, to do my shopping. I've been a member of Writers Digest Book Club for years and many of their books have enriched my education about the craft of writing. Anyone want to buy a good used book about writing? My bookcase overfloweth!

Your BOOK PLACE Box

Anyone in the Dallas/Lewisville area is invited to stop by and hello. I'll be at the Barnes & Noble bookstore Saturday, Feb. 9th from 2 to 4 pm.

The two booksignings in January (Tyler's Barnes & Noble on Jan 12th and Longview's Hastings Books & Music on Jan 26th) were interesting experiences. Didn't sell many books but did get a chance to talk with folks who also have depression as a part of their lives. It was rewarding to be able to share with them there is hope.

If you're wanting more information, you can go to my website www.freewebs.com/gayingram to find out about the following books I've had published:
'Til Death Do Us Part
Troubled Times
Tracks On The Sands
The Stirred Pot

Keeping Up the Juggling Act

In the beginning of my writing career, the goal I strived toward was to achieve publication. Over time, that began to be realized. First came magazine articles, a story accepted for publication in an anthology and eventually...a real, live book in hand. Wow! I still recall the wonder and thrill of it.

My enthusiasm and inner urge to write kept growing stronger but with the publication of a novel something interesting began to happen. Since I wasn't fortunate enough to get my manuscript accepted… Continue

Getting Down To Writing

Here in East Texas, we've been enjoying a spell of "Indian Summer" weather. Makes a person want to spend all their time out of doors, soaking up sunshine and watching leaves drift to the ground. Of course, all those falling leaves portend hours of raking sometime in the not too distant future.

But lounging in an Adirondack chair, steaming cup of coffee in hand, does not get the writing assignments completed. So, reluctantly I drag myself to my little office building and shuffle through

Writing On Speculation - The Way In

What’s the big resistence to writing on speculation? How else do just-getting-started writers expose their efforts to possible purchasers of their work? Writing is so subjective, how else will an editor have the opportunity to see if your writing is something he’s interested in or if your style is suitable for his/her publication? I wouldn’t buy a new pair of shoes without looking them over and trying them on. Why should I expect an editor to buy something sight unseen?

One of my first

Fighting the Writing

Yesterday I took an unfinished manuscript out of the box where I'd packed it away. That collection of notepads of scribbled pages, printed-out sheets of research notes and bits and pieces of ephemera just wouldn't leave me alone. It's a novel I began almost five years ago, filled with enthusiam at the time. I got somewhat over one hundreds printed pages into it and got stuck.

Well not actually stuck. Looking back, now I realize it was a remark by a critique partner that threw up the ro

Gay,
I know what you mean. They talk about using the Web, and I'm lucky if I get to the sites I want to see. I'll never use it the way younger people do, but it is fun to try.

Hi Gay,
Glad you like my website.
I try to fit a lot of things in there. Sometimes it gets overstuffed, kind of like my house!

Check out the Mystery of the Missing Checks

Monday, I'm over at my group blog, http://makeminemystery.blogspot.com/, where I'm blogging about the mystery of the missing checks. Come on over and find out what it's all about.

Thanks,

Can We Talk?

I'm firming up some dates for speaking engagements in 2010. One's tentatively set for March 28, at 1:30 at the Niles Public Library, another probably in mid May at the Schaumburg Township District Library.

Also, coming up is a radio interview at WJJQ again on May 7, at 9:35 a.m. before my booksigning May 8 at Cover to Cover Books in Tomahawk, WI.

I've heard that some people are more afraid of public speaking than of dying. Surprisingly, I find it easier each time I do it. As long as I have my cheat sheet with me to glance down at once in a while for security and I like what I'm talking about, I'm okay.

What about you? Do you like to talk or would you rather not?

Helpless

Over the Holiday weekend I took a good look at my house and that familiar helples feeling washed over me again. It seemed like an insurmountable task to get the place in order. It still does.

I spend so much time writing and promoting after I do my day job, what little time I have left is precious. Still, sometimes I just have to buckle down and ignore my compulsion to write and make myself clean house instead. I tackled the spare bedroom, which had clothes and all kinds of other articles strewn over the bed, on the floor, and anywhere you can think of, compliments of myself and the DH, who were equally guilty.  I did make some headway, which made me feel good, but if I had more time I know I could do better. Also, there are so many other projects left to do if I were to get the house really into shape. I'm wondering how much I'll get done before Christmas, when I have my family over.

Maybe over the weekend I can get more done, that is, after I do the Illinois sales tax form first, which is due by the end of the month. I've got almost all of my check statements, except one, which I think I can find online, so maybe I can get that done. You may have guessed I'm not the most organized person in the world.

Anyway, let's see how far I can get cleaning up. I've got this kindle on loan from the library, with about 9 days left on it, and lots of good books on it beckoning to me. I've got some great ideas for stories I want to start and others I want to continue. I've got some blog buddies I haven't visited for a while. I wonder what will win out. (g)

What about you? What do you do about housework? Does it get in the way sometimes?

PS The not so surprising results are up on the left for my EZ poll. I'll have to do a harder one some time.
