About Me:
Breakout: A Search for Being (Fine Tooth Press, 2004) first developed at a time when I felt the weight of 10 years of privileged educational opportunity coming to a halt, and as I looked around at where I was, the thought occurred to me: “How the fuck did I get here, and was it worth it?”

The complexities of being black in predominantly white academic environments plagued me much more than I had acknowledged. Despite the blessings of education, I was fairly miserable, barely knowing who I was. Not in that confused Michael Jackson way—there was no cultural identity confusion. The questions ran deeper and, for a person who had never thought about things like spirit and purpose, it can be like cave diving into the darkest, most-bottomless pit in existence—how deep does this rabbit-hole really go? The value of what I was supposed to get from those ten years of privileged education wasn’t necessarily of greater value than what those ten years did to my sense of being.

It was during this time that I began to ask questions; for once in my life, consciously ask questions. What was the point of all this higher education; leaving my home to essentially assimilate into another America that nobody wants to admit still exists separately? What does that separation do to each of us without us knowing it? And is it just me, or is 97% of this society completely nuts?

The outcome of this query was an exploration of the universal aspects of our misshapen culture, including materialism, racism, and the denial of true individualism. Joining me on this journey was a good friend of mine, in many ways completely opposite of the world I grew up in, but the one thing we had in common: navigating the complexities of being black in late 20th century America while negotiating educational opportunity, taboos, questions of “selling out,” and definitions of success.

My intention was to give us all something to think about as the American Dream slowly evaporates into a quaint fantasy while our minds and souls undergo constant assault by out-dated concepts about who we are and what really matters. Race and class are only but two components of the tools used to separate people from each other, eventually separating us from ourselves. My hope is that Breakout lend toward part of a trend that re-opens the dialogue that brings us back to what America is supposed to be.

MORGAN'S OWN BLOGSPOT

Come on Over

I'm over at a few other blogs today. If you get a chance, come on over to see the Christmas Decorations at http://acmeauthorslink.blogspot.com/

At http://bloodredpencil.blogspot.com/  the topic is Spoiled Milk. Ever sit down to read a good book and been disappointed?

If you haven't yet, check out the post below about the Paper War.

Thanks,
Morgan Mandel

Paper War

I've been waging a war on paper the last few days. So far, paper is winning. The more I clean up, the more of it I find. The problem is, for much of it, I feel an obligation to do a thorough examination and decide whether or not it's worth keeping.

The mailperson is my enemy. He, sometimes she, keeps leaving more paper in my mail box. I'm not talking about my Christmas cards, which I cherish, but all the other stuff dropped off for me to sort out. At times it's torture to come home and see the new pile the DH has set on the kitchen table.

I've discovered tons of magazines over a year old. They were trying to hide in a magazine holder on the side of the couch, but not doing a good job of it, since they were spilling over. Of course, I decided to check the headings on the covers to see if some of the information inside might prove valuable. Wouldn't you know it, I was right. Many articles seemed to good to give up.

I've already mentioned here before about how I also have a compulsion to print out emails that seem important to me. The result is I have lots of important pieces of paper. When there's an abundance, which is the most important? And, where's the one I really need? It is a quandary.

What about you? Is paper your enemy? Are you also waging a war against it? Who is winning?
