My question to the publishing world: “How much do I love thee, let me count the ways.”
What’s up family. I read many of the posts regarding this subject, (What makes and author legit?) and thought to chime in, however brief. Legit, or Illigit? First off, if you even asked that question of yourself, you can chalk it up. Maybe not for good, but at least for now. Point blank, your power of intention and your will are not focused. And while you’re even learning to be focused, 100 people are running ahead of you as “first movers.” And while you’re learning to be a first mover, someone else (50 someone else’s) are running ahead of you because they found financing. And just when you got your hands on some scrilla, there are 25 others who have friends in the media to help them get ahead, But even 10 of those warriors trampled you, since they’re now riding tigers (sponsors) to the finish line. Me? I’m a dragon-slayer. So, those tiger-riders are irrelevant to me! I’m riding the biggest, hungriest tigers; and I don’t need one, I need a brood of swift, saber-tooth, Siberians that can work together. Those who found financing? They’ve only encouraged and inspired me to find MORE money and to come forth with BIGGER, more CREATIVE ideas that will overcome the odds of being left out. And still, those others with the media friends? I know they can’t match my savvy or my value, because I’ve spent quality time MASTERING my craft. So I can often back up what I say out of my mouth with my work. Plus, my energy is positive, and that helps with my sense of connectivity to everything and everybody. And those “First Movers?” Maybe they were the first to work from their trunk with two books, so I’d just have to have a bigger trunk, cause I’ll need to be a different first mover, with more titles, and more substance in my marketing. The point here? Fix your state of mind to that of a “winner” and you’ll never need to question your authenticity in any walk of life. Trust me; the credibility and the substance gives you a different “swagger” when you walk in a room. That swagger is addictive and magnetic and it feels GREAT! Trust me!!! Secondly, if you chose this game, you’d better be ready for the “whim and the wham.” The WHIM: that next author (or competitor) who is beside you, maybe at a book fair, servicing a reader who totally fell for a superficial pitch to what you feel (and maybe even the rest of us would agree or opin) is a “superficial book.” The salesman is winning with his or her BS. The buyer is built and nurtured to be a conformist; and there you have a relationship that was meant to be. You’ve just witnessed the almighty impulse purchase. The WHAM: when you’ve busted your ass to publish your first book, and you go into a store like Do-Sam Books, and the owner, Ms. Sara Villanova virtually tosses the book back in your face and says, “Well, you’re not exactly a Shannon Holmes.” WHAM! In your face! You suck you aspiring author! And I don’t need to read your book to pass judgment because I know everybody and everything! WHAM! You get through to a radio station, and one greezy (yes, I meant to spell it that way), grimy rat within the stations infrastructure is jealous of you and your aspirations. No interview for you. WHAM! WHAM! WHAM! As I said, get ready for the whims and whams of this business. Finally, (trying to leave three points here), your Teflon must be tough out here, family. I’m right now rushing to get this log done, while I’m starving from mal-nutrition, while the streets are waiting for me, while I know I shouldn’t be there because there is a book to be edited (by me) and there is an investor meeting this morning. I’m even banking on my crisp mind for the necessary tools that can make what I’m saying coherent enough to both teach you and motivate you. All of this is happening at once, with clocks ticking (all sorts of physical, mental, social and financial clocks), and you gotta be ABOUT it to cope! Don’t get in the game (ANY GAME) and expect it to stay the same. There’s hardly such a thing as a desk job anymore. And people are being laid-off everyday from what they THOUGHT was a sweet position, at a firm that they THOUGHT was safe and sound. Well, WAKE UP CALL! It’s just NOT that type of party anymore. Get on your game, master your craft, find your MOJO, and ride with the tigers fellow authors. Understand that good books are one thing, good writers are another; but in the end, can you do it all and still be a good person?
Word.
Relentless Aaron
