Profile Information

Are you an Author, Reader, Publisher, Editor, Agent or Other?
My name is Thomas "Sonny" Garrett and I'm the author of "A View from the Hills." It's a collection of my weekly newspaper columns from over the years. There's humor, nostalgia and even a tearjerker or two in it. It's published by Outskirts Press.
Do You Have A Website?
My publisher has an author's Web site, www.outskirtspress.com/aviewfromthehills.

I also have a MySpace site, www.myspace.com/aviewfromthehills.
About Me:
I've been in the newspaper business for nearly 35 years, since my days at East Texas State University (now Texas A&M Commerce). After working at the Texarkana Gazette, I moved to The Baxter Bulletin here in Mountain Home, Ark., and have been with the paper 29 years. I've worked as a reporter, columinst, editoiral writer, associate editor, city editor and now senior writer and editorial page editor. Through the years, I've received awards from the Arkansas Press Association and Associated Press Managing Editors for reporting, column writing, editorial writing, feature writing and, once, even photography.

I'm married, and my wife Kim and I have two children, Eli, 22, and Amelia, 11. (We didn't get in a hurry between the two.) Along with writing, I like reading, photography, the outdoors, music (especially live music), movies, travel (when possible) and being with my family. We're NASCAR fans who have cheered for years for Mark Martin, who's from just down the road at Batesville, Ark. I also enjoy food, both cooking and eating. My wife, daughter and I are devoted Food Network viewers.
Do you have a blog site?

Favorite Books:
Way too many to name here. Among my favorite writers are Clive Cussler, Louis L'Amour, James Rollins, Tom Clancy, J.T. Edson, Stephen King. Also on my list are Max McCoy, J.K. Rowlings,

More recently, I've encountered the work of other writers I've come to enjoy -- among them Kristy Tallman, Louise Bohmer, Bonnie Clark, Skyler Grey, Vickie Hinzer, Derek Musgrave, Mary Chapman to mention a few,
Favorite Bookstores on land or cyberspace
My favorite brick-and-mortar bookstores, at least the ones I've frequented most, are Hastings, Barnes & Noble and Borders (one's here in town and the other two are nearby in Springfield, Mo.)

I also like Amazon.com, B&N.com.

Recovering

I'm currently recuperating from surgery. I had a hernia that generated what Hunter S. Thompson probably would have called king-hell pain, and went in for emergency surgery a week ago. All's going well, so far. I've found the worst parts of recuperation are the boredom and wearing down much too quickly. I never thought I'd say it, but I'm anxious to get back to work.

As an update, my book's doing fairly well. Sales have been good, although they're a bit slack now. I hope being able to get out an… Continue

"A View from the Hills" is out

My first book, "A View from the Hills," is officially out now and, so far, doing well. I launched it with a book signing last Saturday at the local Hastings, which went great. There was a very good turnout, sold and signed several books, and got to see some old friends and make new ones.

"A View from the Hills" is a collection of my newspaper columns. I've been writing the column since 1983, so I had quiter a few from which to choose. They're mostly from the '80s with several of a more current… Continue

I'll tell you now, Sonny, I was born jest outside Dallas, and though I don't live there, I have lots of close kinfolk in Texas. You being a gentleman from that hilly state of Arkansas, you would know what I mean when I say "I sets on the top rail of the fence when I tell mah stories." 106 isn't so bad, as long as you get your oil changed frequently, and gets your air cleaners and such blown clean under the hood.
Lookin' forward to swappin' yarns with you, iffen you can get away from those presidential hopefulls that keep pesterin' you for what they should say on CNN. I'll be with you directly, after I get Warren Buffet straightened out on his latest Swiss deal. He never could get that Boernese dialect right.

Come on Over

I'm over at a few other blogs today. If you get a chance, come on over to see the Christmas Decorations at http://acmeauthorslink.blogspot.com/

At http://bloodredpencil.blogspot.com/  the topic is Spoiled Milk. Ever sit down to read a good book and been disappointed?

If you haven't yet, check out the post below about the Paper War.

Thanks,
Morgan Mandel

Paper War

I've been waging a war on paper the last few days. So far, paper is winning. The more I clean up, the more of it I find. The problem is, for much of it, I feel an obligation to do a thorough examination and decide whether or not it's worth keeping.

The mailperson is my enemy. He, sometimes she, keeps leaving more paper in my mail box. I'm not talking about my Christmas cards, which I cherish, but all the other stuff dropped off for me to sort out. At times it's torture to come home and see the new pile the DH has set on the kitchen table.

I've discovered tons of magazines over a year old. They were trying to hide in a magazine holder on the side of the couch, but not doing a good job of it, since they were spilling over. Of course, I decided to check the headings on the covers to see if some of the information inside might prove valuable. Wouldn't you know it, I was right. Many articles seemed to good to give up.

I've already mentioned here before about how I also have a compulsion to print out emails that seem important to me. The result is I have lots of important pieces of paper. When there's an abundance, which is the most important? And, where's the one I really need? It is a quandary.

What about you? Is paper your enemy? Are you also waging a war against it? Who is winning?
