Developing a new blog as of January, 2009 based on biographical stories and essays for a possible book. Comments appreciated - see address below..
About Me:
Went from thinking about early retirement to doing. Moved to NY to join my new lady and living by the following quote:
"It takes a lot of time to be a genius, you have to sit around so much doing nothing, really doing nothing." Gertrude Stein

Having done that for the last year or so, feel the time might be right to do some writing - there is just too much effort in that becoming a genius plan.

All of my books are favorites.
Favorite Bookstores on land or cyberspace

Your BOOK PLACE Box

We have all enjoyed those “Features” sections on the latest DVD movies; Commentaries by the Director, Producer, Writer(s), Actor(s) - whomever; Alternate Endings, Deleted Scenes - well what about commentaries for books?

It should be a relatively simple matter to create a chip which could be inserted in/on a page (maybe, for now, inside the back cover) powered by a battery hidden in the spine. At the moment the state of the art seems to be including a song in a Greeting Card but it’s a step in the right direction!

For the entrepreneur who brings this to market; remember, you heard about it here first!

Musically Speaking

I’ve really been enjoying my Ipod - coming up to 3,000 tunes in the palm of my hand! Who would have thunk it? In the car, I mostly keep it on Shuffle mode; one surprise after another going, for example, from Cumbawamba’s "Tubthumping" (‘I get brought down but I get up again, you’re never going to keep me down.....’) to Akiko Yano singing about "Sake in a Jar" backed up by The Chieftains.

The other night I was celebrating the lack of a need to be sad while feeling reflective all the sam

Hi Ed,
I would suggest you go to Authornation.com and http://howtowriteabook.ning.com and sign up on those sites for critic and advice. They're both good sites and both free. I have made useful connections on those and other sites, I think you would as well!
Best,
Carol

Hello Ed,
I looked at your blog today. Do you have any ideas on how to get viewers to your blog? May I suggest you make an early attempt to promote your blog as to build an interested group of followers so if and when you do produce a book you alreay have a following? I don't see a link to the blog on your page here--might I be missing it?

Good morning Ed. That is the only problem with blogs--posts get buried. I will check out the post tonight.
Have a wonderful day!

Never, never a pest!!!
That's a shame the program has not been picked up and managed. I absolutely LOVED the idea! I'm not tech savey enough either.
Blogspot might work for you but are you looking to collect others notes, or just your own? Because Ning sites like this one are easy and free to use and can add members. To create one, go to http://www.ning.com. I think they have a tutorial.
Blogspot sites are pretty easy as well. To start one, I think you can go to http://www.blogger.com (might have a tutorial there as well). Blogs are easier to promote and if you do it with some thought (I know you would), you can promote your new book at the same time!
Definately keep in touch!

Hi Ed, wow, I had no idea tech had come that far! That's exciting for this industry. I know things are really moving fast and if we, as authors and publishers, don't keep up with the Jones, we'll be finished before we begin.
Thanks for the comment. Please let me know if I can help you in any way when you get your book together.
Best wishes,
Carol

Hi Ed,
Thanks for your comment. I'm so happy you will be pursuing your writing dream. There's just no better feeling than seeing your book idea in actual physical form. But...the satisfaction of doing the writing is a fullfilling dream as well! If you don't already know, I have a wonderful blog for writers at http://abookinside.blogspot.com. It has some very useful information for writers as well as a lot of freebies.
As a matter of fact, my book is available in Kindle now. I didn't really think many people had Kindle, but there you are!
Your idea is awesome, really awesome. I might keep it to yourself for now, never know who'll grab it from you!!!
Keep in touch!

Hi, Ed. My role as a publishing consultant is more narrowly defined than "all aspects of publishing." I specialize in design & layout, printing, distribution and marketing of books. I have a cadre of editors, too, that help an author polish a manuscript before it goes to press. I've found that most self- and small publishers get too involved in the manufacturing of the book (layout & design and printing) and don't focus enough on the marketing and distibution. Manufacturing should be about 10% of the focus while marketing and distribution is the other 90%. Many authors/publishers get so wrapped up in the look & feel of the book that they have nothing left (physically, emotionally and financially) to sell the book. Books are like children, in one regard. Once you birth them, you are responsible for them throughout the rest of their lives. Plan for the long haul. A book is a minimum three year commitment of time, focus, energy and money.

Check out the Mystery of the Missing Checks

Monday, I'm over at my group blog, http://makeminemystery.blogspot.com/, where I'm blogging about the mystery of the missing checks. Come on over and find out what it's all about.

Thanks,

Can We Talk?

I'm firming up some dates for speaking engagements in 2010. One's tentatively set for March 28, at 1:30 at the Niles Public Library, another probably in mid May at the Schaumburg Township District Library.

Also, coming up is a radio interview at WJJQ again on May 7, at 9:35 a.m. before my booksigning May 8 at Cover to Cover Books in Tomahawk, WI.

I've heard that some people are more afraid of public speaking than of dying. Surprisingly, I find it easier each time I do it. As long as I have my cheat sheet with me to glance down at once in a while for security and I like what I'm talking about, I'm okay.

What about you? Do you like to talk or would you rather not?

Helpless

Over the Holiday weekend I took a good look at my house and that familiar helples feeling washed over me again. It seemed like an insurmountable task to get the place in order. It still does.

I spend so much time writing and promoting after I do my day job, what little time I have left is precious. Still, sometimes I just have to buckle down and ignore my compulsion to write and make myself clean house instead. I tackled the spare bedroom, which had clothes and all kinds of other articles strewn over the bed, on the floor, and anywhere you can think of, compliments of myself and the DH, who were equally guilty.  I did make some headway, which made me feel good, but if I had more time I know I could do better. Also, there are so many other projects left to do if I were to get the house really into shape. I'm wondering how much I'll get done before Christmas, when I have my family over.

Maybe over the weekend I can get more done, that is, after I do the Illinois sales tax form first, which is due by the end of the month. I've got almost all of my check statements, except one, which I think I can find online, so maybe I can get that done. You may have guessed I'm not the most organized person in the world.

Anyway, let's see how far I can get cleaning up. I've got this kindle on loan from the library, with about 9 days left on it, and lots of good books on it beckoning to me. I've got some great ideas for stories I want to start and others I want to continue. I've got some blog buddies I haven't visited for a while. I wonder what will win out. (g)

What about you? What do you do about housework? Does it get in the way sometimes?

PS The not so surprising results are up on the left for my EZ poll. I'll have to do a harder one some time.
