See, Even Illustrators get Rejection Letters...lol.

Bidding on projects &/or providing fresh samples based on a project's description rather than past work is part of the business. In illustration you learn to develop a speculative look at your work much like I would assume an author has to. Critiques are actually known for being very public & at times disappoi… Continue

Loving what you do adds passion!

And thank you! We are redesigning the covers for the first four books of this series (in preparation for their re-release through Dancing Lemur Press), but intend to keep the cover for MIKE intact. I am still really pleased with that one!

I did a quick calculation of the cost of a conventional print run and the break even point and concluded that I don't have the energy or inclination to go ahead with a print run which would require my driving considerable distances with a trunk full of books. The money just there. I'll have to stick with lulu.com for the time being. With lulu I have no paperwork to deal with, no driving, no showing up at gift shops to make a pitch. The royalty checks might be small and infrequent, but they are better with lulu than I get from my publishers of which I have three: two electronic/pod and one commercial niche. Visit
www.hu.mtu.edu/~hlsachs for free stuff and fun.

If you look at the covers used by Wings ePress, they uniformly have at the bottom "a Harley L. SACHS myserty" which I've tried to mimic for name recognition.
I don't know quite what to do about the project right now because my spring return to Michigan is fast approaching. My wife needs caregiving and I'm going to need to accomodate her needs.
I've ftrinkered with various ideas for the Keweenaw book. A cover I did was a piece of the US government nautical chart with the titles and author superimposed, but that's not very colorful or dramatic. ANother possibility is a picture of a drowned girl overlaid by a watery double exposure. If you look at the picture I used for "The Mystery Club Solves a Murder" it has a corpse photo. the artist had a friend lie on the carport pavement for the photo. Since a porn site figures in the story, something racy might attract readers.
I have to consider the cost/return/breakever ratios. For instance, if it costs $3000 for 500 copies plus the cost of the cover art of (just a number) $250, and the per copy cost is around $6.50, selling price $15, discounted 40% is $9 for retailers, and I make roughly $3,50 a copy, I don't break even until I've sold over 350 copies. If I sold all 500,I'd make ony $525. Considering the other costs, like mileage and labor and office costs, this becomes a lesson in futility. Funny how sitting down with a calculator can find thje answers! I guess I'd better stick with lulu.com. This is a hopeless business.

My Impressions - Barbara Walters Show & Academy Awards - Morgan Mandel

I've got a sore throat, which means a cold or the dreaded flu, but I got bored with sleeping.

To break the monotony, I watched Barbara Walters interview:

Miley Cyrus - or Destiny Hope Cyrus, which was the first name her parents gave her. She's 15 years old and already owns an entire wing in her parents' home. What a life!
Very engaging young girl who seems to have her head on straight despite all of her notoriety.

I also watched Barbara Walters interview Ellen Page, a very pretty 21 year old, very sensible, but she just had to close the interview singing a song which I can't get out of my head - nice little ditty.

Vanessa Williams - who spoke about the controversy over her nude photos and admitted they weren't worth it in the long run. Very lovely woman who admitted she, like many other movie stars, uses Botox.

Harrison Ford - who says his new Indiana Jones movie, set for release in May, will not hide the passage of time. Harrison himself is now 65, but doesn't look it.

I love the glamor of the Academy Awards. I particularly enjoy watching what the stars wear and how their hair is done. Sometimes they look completely different in person than on the sample movie clips shown.

Many of the women are wearing strapless gowns - which always make me a bit nervous - how do they keep them up without spilling out of them?

Anyway, I haven't seen any of the movies, but will eventually do so on DVD.

I just watched Tilda Swinton win supporting actress. She looked totally surprised. It was refreshing to see that much spontaneity.

Anyway, I'm signing off now so I can enjoy the rest of the Awards - Also to Dream that some day my romantic comedy, GIRL OF MY DREAMS by Morgan Mandel can be made into a movie - Well, I did say it was a dream, didn't I?
